May 27, 2022 - Calverton, NY, The Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts of America, proudly announces the annual Flag Placement at Calverton National Cemetery this Saturday, May 28th at 9:30am. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other community groups will work together to honor our nation’s heroes who are no longer with us.
“It’s a privilege for our Scouts to honor our service people and their spouses. We are passing on the lessons of our country to our young people,” explains Suffolk County Council President David Hunt. “We encourage our Scouts to read each gravestone and try to learn about the hero they are honoring. How old were they? What service were they a member of?”
This solemn tradition began in 1995. Of the more than 5000 volunteers who participate annually, close to 3000 are Scouts, BSA units and their families.
“It’s amazing to see how efficiently the groups accomplish the flag placement each year,” said a grateful Calverton Flag Placement Committee Chair Frank Bailey. “The entire cemetery of more than 285,000 graves is usually decorated in less than an hour.”
Flags remain in place for one week at Calverton. Scouts and other volunteers will return on Saturday, June 4th to collect the flags and package them for use next year.
